The fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein was painted by both Gerhard Richter (Schloss Neuschwanstein, 1963) and Andy Warhol (Neuschwanstein Castle, 1987). It was originally dreamed up and commissioned by King Ludwig II, the Fairy Tale King. (He was the subject of Syberberg’s 1972 film Ludwig: Requiem For A Virgin King.) Neuschwanstein is in Bavaria, and was the inspiration for the castle in Disney’s cinematic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty: a real-life European fantasy becomes an American screen-life fantasy.
